Sainsbury’s Offers £8.50 Spring Saving on Award-Winning Trevethan 1929 Dry Gin

Gin lovers looking to elevate their spring gatherings can enjoy a seasonal saving on one of the UK’s most highly rated spirits, as Trevethan 1929 Dry Gin goes on promotion at Sainsbury’s this April.

From 8th to 28th April, Nectar card holders will be able to pick up the Cornish-crafted gin for £29.50, reduced from its usual £38 price tag — a saving of £8.50 just in time for Easter entertaining and warmer evenings.

Produced by Trevethan Distillery, the gin has built a strong reputation among enthusiasts and critics alike. It received major recognition at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, where it scored an impressive 98 out of 100 in a blind tasting — one of the highest ever marks for a London Dry gin. The distillery was also named UK Gin Distillery of the Year in 2021.

The spirit itself draws inspiration from a near-century-old recipe. In 1929, a Cornish chauffeur, Norman Trevethan, began crafting his own “bathtub gin,” influenced by the grandeur of London’s historic gin palaces. That original recipe has since been revived and refined by master distiller John Hall who was inspired , blending heritage with modern scientific precision.

Distilled using traditional London Dry methods, Trevethan 1929 balances ten botanicals. Classic notes of juniper, coriander and angelica are complemented by citrus peels, cassia, cardamom and vanilla, alongside locally foraged Cornish elderflower and gorse flower. The result is a well-structured gin with bright citrus on the nose, layered florals and a smooth, subtly spiced finish.

Its growing reputation has also seen it featured in high-end hospitality venues, including Paul Ainsworth at No.6, Lympstone Manor and Ugly Butterfly by Adam Handling MBE, where it is served in both classic G&Ts and cocktails.

Presented in an Art Deco-inspired bottle, the gin offers visual appeal alongside its flavour profile, making it a popular choice for entertaining.

The Perfect Serve

For a refreshing springtime G&T, the dream way to serve Trevethan 1929 Dry Gin is to add the gin first, then the tonic, followed by the ice, so the botanicals are not disrupted. Garnishing with orange peel and rosemary can further enhance the gin’s citrus and herbal notes.
John Hall, Master Distiller says,
“There is one rule in my house on how to make a G&T. Add the gin first!
“As a distiller, and if you’re interested in the chemistry of gin, then you’ll know that tonic water and gin have very different density levels. If you pour gin over ice immediately you’ll shock the botanical oils within the gin, and this will destroy the balance of the drink. If we  put the ice in first, then the tonic, stir, and then the gin in last, what will happen is the gin will cool a lot more slowly. As the gin cools, the lighter density of the gin starts to slowly match the density of the tonic.  The slower cooling is much less of a ‘shock’ to the gin. This way you’ll get a much more balanced drink – the best G&T you’ve ever tried, with the flavour shining through.”
