Norfolk couple finds security and community in a seaside retirement rental community

The number of older renters in the UK is set to soar, with the Pensions Policy Institute predicting that pensioner households renting privately could almost treble to 1.7 million by 2041[i]. As more people rent later in life, finding a home that offers not just security but also support and a sense of community is increasingly important.
For Norfolk couple, Tracy and Pat Gulliver (aged 61 and 82) that meant choosing a retirement development where they could enjoy long-term stability alongside a great community atmosphere. The pair has lived for the past two years in a one-bedroom rental apartment at Meadow Court in Gorleston-On-Sea through My Future Living.
Tracy and Pat moved into their new home after looking for a place that would provide stability and support Pat with his health issues.  Tracy works full time as an NHS call handler coordinating transport for hospital services, while Pat is 16 years retired from his job as laundrette supervisor.
The couple were previously renting a privately owned one-bedroom apartment at Meadow court, however, like many private renters, they lived with the ongoing worry they could be asked to leave by their landlord at any time.
When a one-bedroom apartment within the same development became available to rent on an assured tenancy through My Future Living, the couple jumped at the opportunity. The move allowed them to remain in the community they valued while securing an assured tenancy, providing long-term stability without the fear of unexpected notice.
The rent also covers property maintenance, service charges and buildings insurance, reducing the risk of unexpected repair costs; and annual rent increases are linked to the Retail Price Index, helping them plan financially.
Tracy continues: “At this stage of life, knowing we won’t ever be asked to leave is incredibly important to us. You can’t really put a price on that stability, with no unexpected extra costs.”
There is also a 24-hour careline in each apartment, which provides constant support and peace of mind while Tracy is at work, plus there are other people in the development that Pat can chat to during the day if he wants to.
She adds: “I’m busy out at work all day so the careline gives me real reassurance. I know there’s always someone on hand if anything should happen. It’s also a very social place.”
Residents regularly take part in bingo nights, card games, Christmas parties, and indoor boules. Tracy herself is one of the bingo callers, helping to bring residents together.
“Everyone has everyone’s number, and people genuinely look out for one another,” says Tracy.
Gorleston-On-Sea is a lovely seaside resort with a sandy beach, a grand promenade and stunning cliff gardens. This has enhanced their quality of life as the couple often enjoy gentle walks by the seaside together to get some fresh sea air.
Two years on, Tracy and Pat have no plans to move again, having found a home that offered the stability, support, and community they sought.
My Future Living provides affordable rental apartments across the UK for people aged 55 and over, supporting retirees who want independence, community, and proximity to friends and family, without the long-term financial commitments of ownership.
